Professional Development

Childbirth International offers a range of short courses for professional development. Childbirth International Training is accredited with distinction as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC). All CBI courses are awarded continuing education units that are recognized by the American Nurses Association and can be used for certification or recertification. All professional development short courses are self-directed and online. The requirements for the completion of each course are:

  • Read the course manuals
  • Complete the online test (70% pass grade)
  • Complete the evaluation of the course

Courses are designed for all health professionals and birth professionals who would like to develop their skills and knowledge on topics related to pregnancy, birth, and lactation, including:

  • Safety and Infection Control and Prevention
  • Understanding Amniotic Fluid Disorders
  • Issues of the Breech Presentation
  • Diabetes in Pregnancy
  • Exploring Group B Streptococcus
  • Breastfeeding in Special Circumstances

Safety and Infection Control and Prevention

This online course provides 9.2 CEU’s (9.2 hours) of professional development. Focusing on the evidence related to workplace safety, infection control, and infection prevention, this course is designed for professionals working with pregnant or birthing individuals, breast/chest feeding clients, and new families. Once you have read through the course manual you can complete the online test. A 70% pass grade is required. Once you have completed the test you can download your certificate of completion. The course certificate will show evidence of the continuing education hours which can be used for ANA certification and recertification. The course can also be used for the IBLCE requirement for a health science course in safety and infection control for those pursuing IBCLC accreditation.

Understanding Amniotic Fluid Disorders

This online course provides 3.3 CEU’s (3.3 hours) of professional development. Focusing on the evidence related to polyhydramnios and oligohydramnios, you will explore the signs and symptoms of each, testing and diagnosis options, implications for labor, birth, and the postpartum period, and controversies surrounding each condition. Once you have read through the course manual you can complete the online test. A 70% pass grade is required. Once you have completed the test you can download your certificate of completion. The course certificate will show evidence of the continuing education hours which can be used for ANA certification and recertification.

Issues of the Breech Presentation

This online course provides 6.1 CEU’s (6.1 hours) of professional development. Focusing on the evidence related to breech birth, you will explore the complications related to breech birth, different management options for breech birth, the implications on breech birth on labor and the postpartum period, and the controversies related to breech birth. Once you have read through the course manual you can complete the online test. A 70% pass grade is required. Once you have completed the test you can download your certificate of completion. The course certificate will show evidence of the continuing education hours which can be used for ANA certification and recertification.

Diabetes in Pregnancy

This online course provides 4.8 CEU’s (4.8 hours) of professional development. Focusing on the evidence related to diabetes (Type I & II) and gestational diabetes, you will explore the controversies, treatment and management options, and the implications for labor and birth. Once you have read through the course manual you can complete the online test. A 70% pass grade is required. Once you have completed the test you can download your certificate of completion. The course certificate will show evidence of the continuing education hours which can be used for ANA certification and recertification.

Exploring Group B Streptococcus

This online course provides 4.2 CEU’s (4.2 hours) of professional development. Focusing on the evidence related to Group B Streptococcus you will look at the controversies related to this infection and the implications for labor, birth, and the postpartum period. Once you have read through the course manual you can complete the online test. A 70% pass grade is required. Once you have completed the test you can download your certificate of completion. The course certificate will show evidence of the continuing education hours which can be used for ANA certification and recertification.

Breastfeeding in Special Circumstances

All too often breastfeeding parents feel unsupported or are given misinformation about breastfeeding. Our own research shows that nearly 60% of people do not receive support breastfeeding either during pregnancy or after birth. Of those who do receive support, 40% find that it is unhelpful.

This 7-hour online course covers a range of special circumstances that might be encountered by those providing breastfeeding support to clients. These include:

  • Breastfeeding after breast surgery
  • Breastfeeding multiples
  • Breastfeeding after surviving sexual abuse
  • Breastfeeding while trying to conceive
  • Breastfeeding during pregnancy
  • Tandem feeding a baby and an older sibling
  • Induced lactation and relactation
  • Pumping milk or suppressing lactation after a stillbirth
  • Expressing milk in a range of circumstances

You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course highlighting the breastfeeding continuing education hours completed.

This course is suitable for anyone working with breastfeeding parents and requires no prerequisites. In addition to being available as a breastfeeding professional development course, this module is also included in our Breastfeeding Counselor certification program.
